Enjoy the Silence
It's Wednesday. Meaning Bob is with the douchebag from 4-8pm.
And I get to heave a sigh of relief.
I love the kid. Really. But Oh. My. God. Can he drive me to drink. Heavily. During the daytime.
When he was wandering around the house making exasperated noises of boredom--on Monday afternoon--I knew it was going to be a long week. I think yesterday was the longest day yet.
It started with morning Bob my-meds-haven't-taken-effect-yet drama, culminating in Bob being sent to his room. While I was IM'ing my husband about the air conditioner guy being scheduled to come out a few hours later, I got a call from the vet's office--no, the person who left me a message to drop off the cat between 8am and noon was wrong, and I was to have dropped him off between 7 and 8am for his dental cleaning. But never mind, as long as we could get Jake there by 9:30, it should be fine. So I gathered up the children and the cat and off we went to the vet's, where I was told my out-of-pocket cost would be around $60 (in addition to the $22 a month I already pay for their stupid "wellness plan." Dammit). The AC guy showed up not long after we got home, and quickly informed me we had a leak in the outside unit (in addition to the leak in the inside unit, which we replaced last week for $600). So he said he'd recharge it for free because they felt bad for us, and my husband and the head AC dude were going to discuss our options. Grrrreat.
My husband called me an hour later--30 minutes before we had planned to head off to the pool--and told me the AC guy was coming back to install our new $1500 central air unit.
How the hell are we going to pay for it?
"Don said we'd work something out."
(Indeed. So if you live in the greater KC area, and you have a heating/cooling/water heater issue, call Don at Efficient Comfort Heating & Cooling, 913-631-7751. He rocks.)
While they installed the last of our good credit, I got a call from the vet's office.
"Jake's got a few teeth that need to come out."
Yes, I know this.
"Well, there are a couple that are really, really infected. The third one, the doctor could get a scope all the way up under the tooth, and there's a pocket all the way over to the other side."
Fabulous. How much is this going to cost me?
"Well, if we extract all three teeth today while he's already under anesthesia, it'll be $260."
Yes, I did actually spit Coke Zero all over my keyboard. I can't afford that.
"Okay, well, then today we'll just give you some antibiotics for him for the infected gums. But they will need to come out sooner than later."
Fantastic. My cat needs fucking dentures. And I haven't gotten a paycheck since the first week of June.
By the time our vents were blowing out cold air once again (and we were sufficiently poorer), there was about an hour left before I needed to start making dinner so we could eat and head out for the BMX track. And someone still had to pick up the cat and his expensive, disease-ridden teeth. So I promised Bob we would go to the pool tomorrow, when we had more time because no one had any appointments, no one had to get their teeth cleaned, and no one had to install anything.
Sure enough, I woke up to feed Moosebaby at 5:30 this morning and as I sat there, I heard "ping...ping...ping" on the window followed by thunder.
Dammit.
It rained all morning. We ended up going to the indoor pool at the community center (which he grew bored with after about 30 minutes), followed by a trip to the library where he scored some kick-ass Spiderman books.
I have to say, I can't wait until Adventure Club starts again next week. The kid seems to think he has to be entertained on a continuous basis. I'm sure this comes from dear ol' dad, who does entertain him on a continuous basis--because he only has to do so every other weekend and 4 hours on Wednesday. This house was running like a well-oiled machine until Monday morning. This week, the laundry hasn't been done, there's crap all over the place, and I have no fucking idea what the hell is going on. I didn't even remember to eat today until almost 3:00. It's not that he's being bad, he's just non-stop with the "hey mom" and "look at this mom" and "mom can I have xyz" and "mom can we go here" and "mom why can't we do this" and "mom can you help me do that." It's making me crazy. Seriously.
I'm going to the gym in half an hour. Even though I'm seriously not looking forward to 40 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes of abs, I relish being somewhere that no one will refer to me as "mom." Even if it is only for an hour.
And I get to heave a sigh of relief.

I hear you. Thing is, I long for days when I'm not hearing muuummmmmm! Then, when they're away I think it's too quiet and twiddle my thumbs anxiously waiting for them to get back!
I hear you. Boy, do I hear you.
